Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Willem de Kooning: Paintings 1983–84, the next exhibition in his gallery at 1018 Madison Avenue.

This exhibition will consist of five paintings which de Kooning made between May 1983 and June 1984 in his studio in East Hampton, New York. The five paintings are still owned by the artist and have never been exhibited before. They are characterized by open and airy lyrical ribbon-like contours in red and blue on a white ground, with touches of yellow, green and purple.

Willem de Kooning’s late paintings made between 1981 and 1987 are currently the subject of a major traveling museum exhibition which debuted at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art at the end of 1995 and will be on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York concurrently with this exhibition.

A central part of the exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery is the accompanying fully illustrated catalogue which, for the first time, reproduces color photographs taken by Willem de Kooning’s studio assistant documenting the successive stages of each painting on view, as de Kooning worked on them in this studio. These photographs show de Kooning’s working process in an unprecedented way. The publication includes an essay by Richard Shiff as well as a series of never-before-published photographs from 1983 of the artist at work by Hans Namuth.

Willem de Kooning: Paintings 1983–84 will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 1018 Madison Avenue (between 78th & 79th Streets), through Saturday, March 29, 1997. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 – 5:30 PM.
