Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Terry Winters: Paintings and Drawings, the next exhibition at his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.
The exhibition will consist of 16 paintings and a group of drawings, all of which have been made within the last year and are being exhibited here for the first time.
Winters’s latest work continues to explore new uses for abstraction while incorporating a wide variety of visual influences, from computer-generated graphics to photography to kaleidoscopic formal arrays.
The paintings divide into two distinct groups. The first, the Standardgraph series, consists of four large-scale canvases, each measuring over six by eight feet. The works maintain an overall grid-based composition—layering distorted yet measured trellises of lines above a contrasting ground—while circular and ovoid shapes hover above, seeming to conform to their own grid, one sympathetic to although different from that of the lines below. Winters says of these works: “The paintings map and diagram multiple, divergent paths. Topology directs the ‘level’ of the image while gesture and touch construct assemblies of information.”
The second series of paintings focuses on color and consists of seven vertical canvases, each with a palette centered around a particular hue while bearing witness to the artist’s melding of architectonic composition and organic form. Again, Winters writes: “Each painting is an organization of varying speeds and intensities—a pragmatic practice of the abstract mixing and rearranging of data.”
The drawings in the exhibition include Turbulence Skins, a group of 42 sheets which serve as the basis for a collaborative book project with the novelist Ben Marcus. The drawings, reworked as lithographs, along with a text by Marcus, will be published this winter by Columbia University. The artist describes the drawings as “wireframe forms” which become “uncentered, unlimited, informal distributions in space.”
Terry Winters’s work has been the subject of numerous museum exhibitions, the most recent a retrospective of over 20 years of drawings which was held at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich this past summer. Next fall, an exhibition concentrating on the past decade of Terry Winters’s paintings will open at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts, and travel to museums in Houston and San Diego.
Terry Winters: Paintings and Drawings will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 522 West 22nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) through December 20, 2003. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
