TERRY WINTERS
Drawings

March 10–April 28, 2001

523 West 24th Street
New York

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Terry Winters: Drawings, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

This exhibition will consist of over 70 new drawings executed over the past five years, including four individual series: Subjectile/Objectile, Black and White Examples, Scattering Conditions, and Meshworks.

These recent drawings reflect Winters’s continuing interest in exploring and mapping complex bodies of order, chaos, gravity and speed through the abstract use of color, line and volume. In Winters’s new work, the spaces of the digital age are mediated by the human gesture, creating hybrid images, at once contemporary and archaic. The 20-part Meshworks series, an extended experiment with the paradigmatic grid, is the group of drawings upon which Winters’s new paintings are based.

Concurrent to this exhibition, at Lehmann Maupin Gallery in Soho, Winters will be exhibiting Set Diagram, a new series of 60 paintings for which the architect Rem Koolhaas has designed a site-specific installation. Set Diagram will open to the public March 10th as well.

A catalogue of Terry Winters’s drawings with an essay by Scott Rothkopf will be published to accompany this exhibition.

A major retrospective of Terry Winters’s prints opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this June.

A reception will accompany the opening of Terry Winters: Drawings on Friday, March 9th at 5:00 PM at 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues). The exhibition will remain on view until April 28th. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
