ROSEBUD

July 13–August 24, 2019

1062 North Orange Grove
7818 Santa Monica Boulevard
Los Angeles

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Rosebud, the next exhibition in his galleries at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard. Curated by Beau Rutland, the exhibition features the work of ten artists: Guy de Cointet, Nikita Gale, Jacqueline Humphries, Kahlil Robert Irving, Miyoko Ito, Tomashi Jackson, Ellsworth Kelly, Jon Pestoni, Howardena Pindell, and Martin Puryear.

The artists in the exhibition explore the intersection of abstract art and the world around us — the ways in which the stuff of everyday life can break down the very notion of abstraction. Spanning a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography, their works initially appear abstract — or nonobjective, to borrow an earlier term — yet each invokes something of the artist’s own lived experience.

Like the ultimate meaning of “Rosebud,” Charles Foster Kane’s mysterious deathbed utterance in Citizen Kane, the question of image versus abstraction for these artists is both a source of inspiration and a purposely unresolved question.

Rosebud is on view at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard from July 13 to August 24, 2019, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
