RONI HORN
September 13–November 8, 1997
523 West 24th Street
New York

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new sculpture and photographs by Roni Horn at 523 West 24th Street. The exhibition will consist of two installations: Untitled (Flannery), a two-part glass floor piece, and Pooling - You, a suite of color photographs.
Untitled (Flannery) is made up of two solid blocks of blue glass, 33 × 33 × 11 inches each. The glass pieces, weighing over 1000 pounds each, will be installed on the floor of one room.
Pooling - You, is a set of seven color photographs. The images, measuring 42 × 58 inches each, depict the agitated surface of the ocean off the coast of Iceland in varying degrees of magnification. In some of the photographs the image has been enlarged to such an extent (up to a million times) that it appears as an abstract pattern of colors, and is no longer recognizable. Horn prints these photographs in oil-based inks on uncoated paper, making them closer to drawings in appearance than to traditional photographs.
Roni Horn, a New Yorker who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Yale University, has for the past 20 years undertaken frequent journeys to Iceland which have had a major influence on her work. Since the early 80’s she has exhibited her sculpture, drawings and photographs extensively. Roni Horn’s work is currently on view at the Venice Biennale, and an exhibition of her work that relates to Emily Dickinson, Earths Grow Thick, organized by the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio, will travel this November to the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle.
The exhibition will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery at 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) through November 8th 1997. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
