Matthew Marks is pleased to announce the next exhibition in his uptown gallery Richard Serra: The Weight and Measure Etchings and Ike and Tina: A Wall Drawing. The exhibition will be on the 5th and 2nd floors respectively of 1018 Madison Avenue (between 78th and 79th Streets).

Richard Serra’s Weight and Measure project began in 1992 when he exhibited a sculpture of that name at The Tate Gallery, London. The sculpture consisted of the two blocks of solid forged steel, one weighing 35 tons and one 39 tons. As he has since the beginning of his career, Serra visited the sculpture often and filled several sketchbooks with drawings of it. It is from these sketches that Serra, upon his return to New York began the large-scale Weight and Measure drawings and etchings. read more

The Weight and Measure drawings were exhibited at the Drawing Center in 1993–94 and subsequently toured museums in the States and Europe. The six Weight and Measure etchings are exhibited here for the first time. Serra has over the past three years produced an extraordinarily innovative series of works which, without veering away from the traditional etching medium, make use of a magnificent velvety black aquatint. The Weight and Measure etchings will be installed in our fifth floor gallery.

Ike and Tina is a site-specific work to be created in our second floor gallery by Richard Serra. For this exhibition the gallery will be rebuilt as two twenty-one square foot rooms joined by a corridor. Belgian linen is covered with black oil paintstick and cut into specific site-determined forms which are mounted to the walls.

Richard Serra exhibited his first wall-drawing in 1974, in his second one-person exhibition at Leo Castelli. Since that time he has exhibited them widely in museums and galleries all over the world. Ike and Tina is the first new wall-drawing to be shown in New York in ten years.
