Matthew Marks is pleased to announce the exhibition, Nan Goldin: Memory Lost, the next exhibition at his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.
The exhibition will consist of over 100 new photographs reflecting Nan Goldin’s travels over the past two years in France, Italy and Switzerland, as well as her recent experiences in New York City. Her subjects continue to be her friends and family, many of whom are familiar from her earlier photographs. None of these works have been exhibited in New York before.
This exhibition will include 45 new 30 × 40 inch color photographs, including a group documenting Goldin’s intense relationship with a French couple, Joana and Aurele, and their young son, Lou, who lived with Goldin for many months in Paris as well as New York City. These images explore the complex emotions inherent in the couple’s relationship, as well as the notion of family, a subject that Goldin has treated extensively in earlier works. The exhibition will also include five large-scale photographs (each more than 6 × 4 feet) and three “composites” (12–20 photographs arranged by the artist together in a single frame) which capture the narrative spirit of Goldin’s famous slide shows. These composites are concerned with issues central to the artist’s work in the past—in this case, maternity, AIDS, and relationships between women. The multiple image format allows her to expand and develop these themes.
Also included is a series of 52 small photographs, titled Room 22A, which document, from a patient’s perspective, the day-to-day experience of an extended hospital stay. Room 22A represents a subtle departure from the rest of the exhibition—it records a period of stasis and confinement, of introspection and reflection, of tedium and inertia.
A major one-person exhibition of Nan Goldin’s work opens at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, in October, and travels to museums in London and Madrid.
