LUCIAN FREUD
Etchings

November 11–December 23, 2000

523 West 24th Street
New York

Matthew Marks Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Lucian Freud: Etchings at 523 West 24th Street.

This exhibition of etchings by the preeminent British artist, Lucian Freud, will feature a selection of works made over the last 15 years. Freud’s mastery of the etching medium is well-known, and this exhibition will provide a rare opportunity to view working proofs and the artist’s progression from the early states of his etchings to the final print.

For the last 10 years, etchings have been Freud’s principal medium for works on paper. Freud etches directly from a live model in his studio, the same way he makes his paintings. He will work for months on an image and completes only two to three a year. The exhibition will include the two most recent works that have never been shown before. The etchings are printed in small editions by hand in a London studio and published by Matthew Marks Gallery. A fully-illustrated catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition which includes an essay by Esther Freud.

Lucian Freud was born in 1922, grew up in Berlin, and moved to England with his family at the age of ten. His father was an architect and a son of Sigmund Freud. His works have been exhibited throughout Europe and the United States. The Metropolitan Museum of Art held a major exhibition in 1994, and The Tate Gallery in London is organizing a retrospective for 2002.

Lucian Freud: Etchings will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) through December 23, 2000. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
