Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Inez van Lamsweerde: The Widow, the next exhibition in his ground floor gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

The exhibition, van Lamsweerde’s first one-person show in this country, will consist of three new large-scale photographs grouped under the title The Widow. The central figure in the new work is an young girl and includes references to traditional art historical iconography such as the Pieta and the Annunciation. The images are a further development of her previous work in which van Lamsweerde digitally altered the bodies of men, women and children.

Inez van Lamsweerde was born in 1963 in Amsterdam. She has been exhibiting her work in Europe since 1990, and first gained international recognition for a group of photographs exhibited in the 1995 Venice Biennale. Her first one-person museum exhibition was held at the Kunsthaus, Zurich in 1996.

Inez van Lamsweerde’s work was first seen in this country in a group exhibition at P.S. 1 in 1994 and at Artist’s Space in 1995. Her work is included in the current exhibition “Rrose is Rrose is Rrose” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and will be in the forthcoming exhibition “My Little Pretty” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago this Spring.

Inez van Lamsweerde: The Widow will be on view at the Matthew Marks Gallery, 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) through Saturday, May 19th, 1997. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
