GARY HUME
New Paintings
February 21–April 21, 2001
522 West 22nd Street
New York
Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Gary Hume: New Paintings, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.
The exhibition will include 20 new enamel-on-aluminum paintings and a series of new painted bronze Snowman sculptures, all executed over the last year. While Hume is well known for his large glossy paintings, the snowmen are his first sculptures to be exhibited.
Hume continues to focus on flora, fauna and portraiture using his distinctive high-gloss palette, yet his new paintings push further towards complicating and beautifying the relationship between surface and subject, between image and abstraction.
The image of the snowman in Hume’s new sculptures is one which he frequently returns to in painting, printmaking and photography. The snowman is seasonally dependent, a self-portrait and a new image of “the other”—a recognizably simple and yet complex picture of a man.
Over the past two years, Gary Hume has represented Britain at the 1999 Venice Biennale and has had solo exhibitions at the Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. In April, Hume’s work will be included in “Public Offerings” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
A reception will accompany the opening of Gary Hume: New Paintings on Friday, February 23rd from 6 to 9 PM at 522 West 22nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues). The exhibition will remain on view through April 21st, 2001. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
