The North Star 2020
Oil on linen
96 × 96 inches; 244 × 244 cm
This painting is titled after the nineteenth-century abolitionist newspaper published by Frederick Douglass in Rochester, New York. The name of the newspaper is itself a reference to the guiding star used by people who had escaped slavery and were attempting to travel northward to freedom.
