Oppressor with Soul, In Treatment & Suppressor with Spirit, In Treatment 2020
Ceramic, stainless steel, nylon hardware
Dimensions variable

Following her research into various forms of suppression and oppression (ranging from the post-colonial to the personal and psychological), in this installation Phillips envisions the effects of suppressive and oppressive forces on an individual’s body, soul, and spirit.

Two partial-body casts are mounted to stainless steel tension rods, their ears seemingly ruptured from external and internal pressures. The head of Oppressor is angled drastically downward, as if gazing in condescension, while Suppressor appears to be looking upward in avoidance.

Phillips has sculpted in ceramic what she imagines a person’s soul and spirit might look like, setting them in spun-metal dishes inspired by medical bowls for surgical instruments. Soul and Spirit show signs of damage and repair, recalling Phillips’s monoprint series Expanded, In Treatment (2016–present).
