This work belongs to a group of drawings in graphite and pastel on vellum first shown in “Tick Tock,” Gober’s 2018 exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery. Equally enigmatic and intimate, each drawing features several hallmarks of Gober’s practice: a tangle of trees, a human torso devoid of a head, and a glimpse of blue sky through a prison window. In this drawing a series of marks simultaneously represent the forest floor and a thatch of chest hair.
