Following the ancient tradition of death masks that preserve the memory of the departed, Gober created Death Mask in 2008 after the unexpected loss of his dog, Paco. A cast of Gober’s own face forms the basis of the mask, upon which he sculpted Paco’s snout, merging his own likeness with that of his beloved pet.
