Domesticity is a prevalent motif in Gober’s art, as are care and cleanliness. This hand-painted sculpture, cast in plaster, closely resembles a twenty-five-pound bag of cat litter. Gober’s first sculptures of the subject, modeled on ten-pound bags, appeared in a pivotal 1989 installation alongside his sculpture of a wedding dress and the Hanging Man/Sleeping Man wallpaper. The twenty-five-pound version was created the following year for his solo exhibition at the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
